Many parents joke that “this generation” can’t correctly count change back. And they’re not wrong. I’ve witnessed teens using a calculator to give me $0.20 in change. And cash is going away with many businesses no longer even accepting it. However, the skills of quick, simple math will always be relevant. What about getting a toy cash register for your kids or grandkids? This is a good one, and it’s affordable. Help your kids start their own business in your home and they’ll fall in love with it.

MINIMALISM TIP
Minimalism is powerful but only works when we let go of emotional attachments to material possessions. Holding onto things “just in case” or because of sentimental value keeps us trapped in clutter. The real freedom of minimalism comes from understanding that memories live in us, not in objects. Learning to release what no longer serves us opens space — physically and mentally — for what truly matters: experiences, relationships, and personal growth. Let go to make room for a more meaningful life.

NOTION
Since we discussed the toy cash register and your kids “starting their own business,” it would be a great time to teach entrepreneurship. Mark Cuban says we should teach our kids to be entrepreneurs because it will teach them important skills. Cameron Herold, a leading force behind one of the most successful business ventures of the last decade, 1-800-GOT-JUNK, also says we should raise our kids to be entrepreneurs. In Cameron’s TED talk, he says, “Unfortunately the school system is grooming this world to say, ‘Hey, let’s be a lawyer or let’s be a doctor,’ and we’re missing that opportunity because no one ever says, ‘Hey, be an entrepreneur.’” Maybe we should be teaching entrepreneurship in schools. Entrepreneur actually published an article explaining four entrepreneurial skills we need in the classrooms. But we don’t teach this. Even entrepreneurial MBA programs tend to teach you how to manage someone else’s business, rather than how to start your own. Your kids could learn true entrepreneurship. We pay our kids $100 per non-fiction book they read and explain to us.

TRAVEL TIP
Always carry an empty water bottle with you when going on any trip, but especially longer trips. Most airports have refilling stations, so that saves you from spending $5/bottle at the airport store. If you’re worried about the room it takes up try a collapsable bottle. Just make sure to dump anything that’s in it before going through security.
