The most valuable email you’ll read for yourself and your kids in a few MOMENTS per week.
I’ve been posting more Shorts on YouTube. They’ve mostly been related to some productivity principles you can teach your kids.
One of the main reasons Black Friday is so popular is because people are doing their Christmas shopping. What if you started shopping for Christmas now, instead of waiting until the month before Christmas? If you start finding things here and there for Christmas now, it will save you money and allow for better deals, and it also gives you more time to find the perfect gift for your spouse, kids, family, and friends. Christmas shouldn’t be about buying as many gifts as possible. Think quality over quantity. Try getting fewer gifts for people this year, but spending more time to make each one valuable to the person you’re getting the gift for.
I found some gloves that will keep you warm all winter and still let you use your phone through the cold months. They’re made to work with a smartphone or other touch screen so you don’t have to take off your gloves to answer a call or send a message. They make them for women and men.
“Experiences, not things” is almost getting overused. And that’s coming from someone who uses it in his website mission statement. But I think we’re quick to think of extravagant travels to exotic places when we think of “experiences.” But there are experiences every day in life. We should all learn to appreciate the little things and see all of life as an experience. A nice workout, a beautiful day, a massage, a family dinner… those are all experiences. Let’s focus on the small ones.
Last week’s book, The Noticer, is one we have read to our kids at dinner. It’s full of great life lessons. But the best book we’ve read to our kids about finances would have to be The Wealth Gardener by John Soforic. Each chapter has a fictional story, followed by the financial lesson from the story. The kids always loved the story part and then we talked through the other part. It’s great because each chapter is short so you can read one a day at dinner and the kids will be engaged.
Teaching kids to understand themselves (self-awareness) may be one of the most important things we could teach. I would’ve loved to understand this better as a kid. I was different in a lot of ways, especially socially, and it always seemed like the teachers directed their lectures toward one type of individual. If we’re taught to understand ourselves, and how we learn, we could change the world. I do think the understanding of different learning styles is increasing, but kids who learn differently are still often brushed off as “problem children.” If they understood why they learned differently, and more importantly, how they learned, it could change everything. Likewise, personality tests shouldn’t just be for corporate training. Kids could benefit greatly from these. In his best-selling book, Emotional Intelligence, psychologist Daniel Goleman explains that more self-aware people have a higher level of psychological health and a more positive outlook on life.
Manage your expectations when traveling… especially when it comes to your luggage. I’m as optimistic as they come, but I’m also realistic and I know that a lot of my happiness comes from low expectations (I’ll talk more about this in a future MOMENTS). At this point, since I’ve seen videos on airports’ luggage systems, I’m not sure how anyone ends up with their luggage at their final destination. And I’ve traveled enough to know your luggage is going to get lost at some point. We shipped a brand new double-stroller from DFW to Venice, Italy and somehow they lost that behemoth of a box. When they do lose your luggage, know that it’s their fault. They should deliver it to you. They have services for this. You shouldn’t have to return to the airport to get it. Even if they don’t lose your bags, expect a delay in getting them at some point. Just be prepared for all of this so you’re not devastated when it happens.
“Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.”
If you had one hour a day for the next month to do whatever you wanted to do, what would you do with it? The answer will show you what you need more of in life. It could be action, it could be family time, it could be rest.
